Content decay
Also called: content decay, declining content performance or outdated content
Content decay is the process by which a page performs less well in search engines over time. An article that initially attracted many visitors may slowly decline in rankings, clicks and organic traffic. This often happens because information becomes outdated or competitors publish better content.
Why content decay occurs
Content decay has several causes. Search behavior changes. New developments make existing information less relevant. Also, competitors regularly publish new articles that better match search intent. As a result, a page gradually loses visibility in Google.
You often see the first signals in Google Search Console or Google Analytics. A page gets fewer impressions, fewer clicks or drops in search results. Knowledge base articles, blogs and surveys in particular are frequently affected. The content remains online, but delivers fewer and fewer results.
