Purple pants
Purple pants is a joking term for someone working in marketing. The term was introduced in 2006 by weblog GeenStijl, which regularly dismissed marketers as talking heads. Since its introduction, the term has taken on a life of its own. Although the epithet "purple pants" certainly cannot be considered a compliment, many marketers wear the term as a joke.
Most purple pants deal with some form of online marketing. They prefer to have at least two different functions on their business card, usually because they are not sufficiently qualified to excel in any of them. The purple pants sprinkle phrases that are laced with jargon but really have no substance.
Purple pants closely follow the latest developments in their field and excel at mispredicting new trends. To showcase their knowledge and build authority, purple pants create their own platforms, for example in the form of weblogs and trade magazines. Many earn more from their appearances as speakers or authors than from actually practicing their craft.
Whether marketers actually wear purple pants above average has not been shown.
