The Internet is a global public computer network. The Internet allows people with Internet-enabled computers anywhere in the world to communicate with each other. It uses high-speed network connections that connect servers, data centers and individual users.
An important part of the Internet is the World Wide Web, which with its millions of websites is a gigantic source of information. E-mail is also a very well-known application that uses the Internet. The Internet facilitates many other applications and protocols. For example, the Internet is widely used within large organizations to share information between multiple locations and to allow employees to work remotely.
In addition to physical connections and protocols and agreements to use them, the DNS system is an important part of the technology behind the Internet. It ensures that Web sites and Web servers can be reached through recognizable domain names.
The history of the Internet begins in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, a millitary computer network developed by the U.S.. This network was later opened up to universities. In the early 1990s, it also became possible for businesses and individuals to access the Internet.
