A/B testing
Also called: multivariate testing or split testing
A/B testing is a method of comparing the effectiveness of two variants. It is widely used on Web sites, in advertisements and within e-mail marketing. Visitors or recipients are randomly divided into two groups, where one group is shown variant A and the other group variant B. By analyzing the behavior of both groups, for example by looking at click behavior or conversion rates, it can be determined which variant performs best.
Why is A/B testing important?
A/B testing helps companies make more informed choices based on data rather than assumptions. Small adjustments, such as a different color for a button or a rewritten call-to-action, can have a big impact on conversions. This approach allows you to continuously optimize and be sure you're deploying the most effective version.
Applications of A/B testing
A/B testing is used in a variety of ways. On Web sites, it is used to test which landing page converts best, which navigation structure is most intuitive or which product description leads to more purchases. In email marketing, A/B testing helps optimize subject lines, sending times and email content to improve open and click rates. It is also used within digital ads to compare different images, texts or bidding strategies, for example.
Conducting effective A/B testing
A successful A/B test starts with a clear hypothesis. What do you want to improve and why? Then you test one variable at a time so you can be sure which adjustment will have an effect. It is important to run the test long enough and collect enough data before drawing conclusions. In addition, make sure the results are statistically significant. This means that the difference between the variants should be large enough to rule out chance. Only when there is a clear winner can you confidently implement the best-performing variant.
