What is Google for Jobs?

Google for Jobs is Google's free job posting platform that shows up as an extra section in search results when people search for jobs. It shows jobs from both job boards and company websites. Complete with details like salary indication and whether the job is full-time or part-time. You can then click right through to the job in question for more information.

By bundling all vacancies in one place, job seekers can quickly and easily find relevant positions. Often with companies nearby and without first browsing through all job boards. Quick and easy. So that's where you want your vacancies to be.

How do you get your job posting on Google for Jobs?

You can get your job on Google for Jobs in the Netherlands through job boards or through your own site:

  • Via job boards
There are several well-known job boards affiliated with Google for Jobs in the Netherlands. Think of Indeed, the Nationale Vacaturebank, LinkedIn, Jobbird and Monsterboard. By posting your job there, it is almost automatically included in Google for Jobs.
  • Via your own site
If you want more control over your vacancies, you can also submit your job page to Google for Jobs yourself. This is based on structured data. Or to be precise: on the basis of JobPosting schema markup. You add this to your job page and Google does the rest. You can read how that works here.

How to get the most out of your vacancy on Google for Jobs

Want to find the right candidate as quickly as possible? With the tips below you can ensure that your vacancy is more visible on Google for Jobs.

1. Complete all fields

Most job sites already require you to enter all the information that Google for Jobs uses for their listings. But are you adding that structured data on your website yourself? Then make sure you at least fill in the following items:

  • Job title
  • Company
  • Location
  • Type of employment (full-time, part-time or internship)
  • Job description
  • Publication date (and end date if you have one)
  • Salary (recommended)
  • Can you fill in more? Do! The system will understand your job better and it will be more visible to relevant people.

2. Use clear job titles

The job title is perhaps the most important thing if you want to increase the visibility of your vacancy. This is what people are looking for. So do some keyword research to check what the most common name is.

Also good to know: Google does not accept other terms in the job title. So "Online marketer wanted" or "Job: Online Marketer" do not work. Neither does "Online Marketer Amsterdam. Just 'Online Marketer' or possibly 'Junior Online Marketer' does.

3. Mention the location

Google for Jobs shows mostly local vacancies. This is because most job seekers want to work in the local area. Make sure the location is mentioned in the structured data (see also tip 1) and include it clearly in the vacancy text.

Use a specific city name. Things like 'Rotterdam area' or 'Netherlands' are too vague and general and will not help your vacancy to become more visible. Let alone get more clicks.

4. Name the salary

It is not obligatory, but it is recommended to include a salary indication in your vacancy. Both on a job site and on your own work-for-hire website. Salary is important to many job seekers and Google often ranks vacancies with a salary indication better than vacancies without a salary indication.

5. Submit a sitemap

Google for Jobs only shows active jobs. By submitting your sitemap in Search Console, your job will be included in the search results faster and will also be removed automatically when your job is filled and your page is no longer active. You only need to do this for jobs on your own site. Read also: What is a sitemap and why do I need to submit it to Google?

And beyond...

Other than that, all the best practices for a job page apply. Write an intro or description that excites potential candidates (which is also partially taken over in Google for Jobs) and optimize your page for SEO to help the search engine understand your job even better.
