Geofilter
Also called: location filter, geographic targeting or geo targeting
A geofilter is a technique that allows content, ads or messages to be visible only to people in a specific location. Companies use geofilters to better target marketing campaigns to a region, city or even a specific radius around a location.
Geofilters are common within online advertising and social media. Think of an ad that is only visible to people in Amsterdam or an action that only applies within a certain zip code area. This allows a campaign to reach a more relevant target group and often increases engagement.
Geofilter in online marketing
With a geofilter, you target ads and content to users in a particular geographic area. This makes campaigns more efficient. For example, a local business owner doesn't have to spend an advertising budget on visitors on the other side of the country. The message gets directly to people who are actually nearby.
Geofilters also play an important role within platforms such as Google Ads, Meta Ads and Snapchat. Especially in local marketing, events and shopping promotions, they provide great value.
