Small Capital
In typography, the term Kleinkapitaal refers to a variant of letter formatting in which words are written entirely in capital letters. However, a smaller version of the original lowercase letters is used so that the distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters remains visible.
Kleinkapital is also sometimes used for writing abbreviations that consist of capital letters. By using smaller capital letters, abbreviations attract less attention optically.
Within kleinkapitalen, a distinction can be made between true kleinkapitalen, which are designed separately from the "regular" capital letters, and false kleinkapitalen, which simply consist of scaled-down versions of the capital letters. In both cases, the height of the capitals corresponds to the x-height.
