Laddering technique
The laddering technique is a qualitative research method used to gain insights into consumer motivation and values. Through targeted questions, researchers find out what specific product attributes consumers find important. This technique helps brands better understand consumer behavior, which provides valuable input for marketing strategies, brand positioning and product development.
How does the laddering technique work?
The laddering technique begins with questions about product features. It then goes on to ask about the benefits perceived by the consumer and finally the underlying personal values. This is often divided into three levels.
- Product Features
- Functional benefits
- Emotional values
For example, a customer who buys an electric car because of its long range (feature) may value it because he needs to charge less often (functional benefit), which matches his need for convenience and freedom (emotional value).
Applications in marketing and brand strategy
Brands use the laddering technique to develop value propositions beyond product benefits. In advertising campaigns, this technique is often used to convey emotionally charged messages. For example, a sports brand may advertise not only comfortable shoes but also the promise of improved performance and self-confidence. By emphasizing these deeper values, they reinforce brand loyalty and customer engagement.
